Chapter 5
Loving You Is Like a Battle
When Teal walked into the front door of her condo, Tyrone was lighting one of the dozens of tea-light candles he had situated throughout the living room. It was dark with the exception of the dim light gleaming from the candles he had already lit.
"Baby, what are you doing home so soon?" Tyrone asked as he blew out the match in his hand he had just lit the candle with. "The book must not have been as good as you said it was in order for your book club meeting to be over this soon." Teal said nothing. "But didn't you say it won Borders bestselling African American romance award?" Still, she said nothing.
Tyrone's intuition kicked in. In an attempt to put out the fire, not the one coming from the candles, but the one he sensed brewing in Teal, he walked toward her. "But I know one thing, I loved the book. I was an all-night man by the time you used every little trick on me that you had learned in that book." After approaching Teal, he attempted to plant a kiss on her lips.
Teal turned her head just as Tyrone thought he was going to kiss her. She then brushed past Tyrone and walked over to the lamp on the glass table behind the couch. She turned on the lamp and proceeded to angrily blow out each and every candle that Tyrone had taken the time to light, surely in preparation for a romantically filled evening.
"Teal, what the heck are you doing?" Tyrone asked. Ignoring him, Teal continued blowing out the candles. "What are you doing? Do you know how long it took me to light those candles?" Still, she ignored him. First puzzled by Teal's actions, but now pissed, Tyrone walked over to Teal and grabbed her by the arm. This time, demanding a response. "Darn it, woman, what the heck is wrong with you?"
"Get off me," Teal said, snatching her arm from Tyrone. She felt a stinging. She looked down at her arm and saw scratches and whelps beginning to form from his nails, which had just accidentally scratched her when she pulled away from him.
"Let me see," he said, trying to grab her arm to examine the scratches.
"Don't touch me!" she yelled at the top of her lungs. "Don't ever touch me again!" Tears blurred her vision. She told herself that she was not gon' cry, but all of a sudden she just broke down into a puddle of tears.
By now, Tyrone could clearly see that something heavy was on Teal's mind; something that weighed more than any burden he had ever forced her to bear with his inappropriate behavior. There was something in Teal's eyes that burned through his soul. It was a fire that couldn't be blown out like some little ole tea-light candle. He observed his woman, noticing how her hair was out of place. He then took note of a couple of scratches, other than the ones heâd accidentally caused.
